Where does the water in Lucknow come from?

Two places, mostly. The city draws surface water from the Gomti and treats it, and it also pumps a lot of groundwater. A large number of houses, apartments and colonies add their own borewell on top of the Jal Sansthan supply. If your overhead tank takes water from both, what comes out of the tap can shift with the season and with how long the borewell has been running.

Lucknow sits on the Gangetic alluvial plain, so the groundwater picks up minerals from the soil as it moves. As the water table drops, borewells get drilled deeper, and deeper water tends to carry more dissolved salts. That is the reason two lanes in the same colony can complain about very different water.

Is Lucknow water actually hard?

Often it is, mainly the borewell water, but there is no single city-wide number. Older academic studies of Lucknow groundwater measured hardness, TDS, chloride and nitrate at sampling points across the city. A review of the city's groundwater found some parameters still above the BIS desirable limits even after improving over the years, and another study of Lucknow water linked high TDS to scaling in pipes and heaters. One 2014 study on fluoride found Lucknow samples within the permissible limit, which is worth knowing, because it means fluoride is usually not your main problem here. Hardness and TDS are.

How do I know if there is hard water in my Lucknow house?

Fitting a softener in Lucknow: what to check first

• Where the water enters. The softener goes after the tank pump and before the geyser.
• Space for two tanks. The resin tank and the salt tank both need floor space.
• A drain within reach. Regeneration flushes salty water out.
• A power socket, with stable voltage. The automatic valve needs it.
• Society or builder permission, if you live in an apartment complex.
