If you've ever pointed a TDS meter at the water coming out of your RO purifier and wondered "is this number good or bad?" — you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get from both homeowners and facility managers.
This is different from asking "what's a safe TDS for drinking water in general" (we've covered that in detail in our Ideal TDS Level for Drinking Water guide). Here, we're answering a narrower and more practical question: once water has passed through your RO membrane, what TDS reading should you actually expect to see — and what does it mean if the number looks wrong?
For most domestic RO purifiers, output TDS should typically fall between 25–150 ppm, depending on your input (source) water TDS and whether your purifier has a TDS controller/mineralizer fitted.
For industrial RO plants, output TDS depends heavily on system design and recovery rate, but a well-functioning single-stage industrial RO typically rejects 90–99% of input TDS — so if your feed water is 1500 ppm, expect roughly 15–150 ppm in the product water, before any post-treatment.
There's no single "magic number" — the right output TDS depends on three things: your input water quality, your membrane's rejection rate, and whether your purifier is intentionally blending in some mineral-rich water via a TDS controller. We'll break down each of these below.
A brand-new RO membrane, running perfectly, can technically push output TDS down close to 0 ppm — but most manufacturers (including Pearl Water) intentionally don't aim for that in domestic purifiers, and here's why:

If your output TDS is higher or lower than expected, it's almost always down to one of these four factors:
1. Input (feed) water TDS Higher input TDS naturally pushes output TDS up too, even with a healthy membrane, simply because rejection rate is a percentage, not a fixed number. Borewell or tanker water with very high starting TDS will always produce a higher output reading than municipal water, even from the same purifier. 2. Membrane condition and age RO membranes lose rejection efficiency as they age or get fouled with scale and sediment. A membrane nearing the end of its life can let more dissolved solids pass through, causing output TDS to creep upward over months. 3. TDS controller setting Domestic purifiers with an adjustable TDS controller let you manually set how much mineral water gets blended back in. If someone has adjusted this — or if it's stuck — your output TDS can be higher than expected even with a perfectly healthy membrane.
4. Pressure and pre-treatment Low inlet water pressure reduces how effectively the membrane can reject dissolved solids. Similarly, if pre-filters (sediment/carbon) are clogged or overdue for replacement, they place extra load on the RO membrane, indirectly affecting output quality. Yes — for most domestic RO purifiers with a TDS controller, 50 ppm sits comfortably in the healthy, good-tasting range. If your purifier has no controller and is a straight RO-only system, 50 ppm is still acceptable, though slightly higher than a brand-new membrane's typical output.
This is the single most common complaint we hear, and it's almost always one of: an aging/fouled membrane, a clogged pre-filter putting extra strain on the system, or a TDS controller that's drifted out of calibration. Before assuming your purifier is at fault, check your TDS meter itself — cheap or uncalibrated meters are a very common source of inconsistent readings. Let the water sample sit at room temperature, rinse the probe with the sample water first, and take three readings to average out noise.
Not necessarily — some high-efficiency membranes without a controller genuinely do output close to 0 ppm. It only becomes a concern if the water also develops an unusually flat, bitter taste that bothers you, in which case a TDS controller/mineralizer add-on can fix that without replacing the whole unit.
