Quick Answer: What Is the Carbon & Sediment Filter Combo (Classic)?

This combo is a matched pair of 10 inch, 5 micron pre-filters for a domestic RO purifier: one Classic sediment filter and one Classic activated carbon filter. Together they cover the first two filtration stages that sit ahead of the RO membrane. The sediment filter catches rust, dust, sand, and dirt. The carbon filter handles chlorine, odour, and organic matter. Both are replaced on roughly the same 3–6 month cycle, which is why they're sold as one unit. The price starts at ?269 (excl. tax) / ?318 (incl. tax), with a 1-year warranty, a 10-day replacement window, and volume discounts of 3%, 4%, and 5% on 2, 3, and 4+ units.

What Do You Actually Get in the Box?

One Classic sediment filter and one Classic carbon filter. That's it, and that's the point: this is a service combo for the two most frequently replaced stages, not a full RO kit. It does not include a housing, an RO membrane, or post-carbon inline filters. If you need those, the comparison table further down shows which kit to look at instead.

Item

Stage it serves

What it protects

Classic Sediment Filter (10 inch, 5 micron)

Stage 1

The carbon filter and RO membrane from rust, dust, and dirt

Classic Carbon Filter (10 inch, 5 micron)

Stage 2

The RO membrane from chlorine, and your water from taste and odour issues

Both fit standard 10 inch housings (2 inch diameter) and are listed as compatible with all types of domestic RO water purifiers.

Which Stage Is This in an RO Purifier?

In a typical Indian RO setup, water passes through the stages in a fixed order. This combo covers the first two:

  1. Sediment filter: removes visible particles from the supply line or tank.

  2. Pre-carbon filter: removes chlorine and odour-causing compounds before they reach the membrane.

  3. RO membrane: reduces dissolved salts and TDS.

  4. Post-carbon inline filter: a final polish before the tap, usually on a longer replacement cycle.

So the answer to "pre carbon or post carbon?" is pre carbon. The carbon filter in this combo sits ahead of the membrane. The small inline post-carbon on the output side is a different, separately replaced part. Pearl Water's guide to everything about RO filter kits shows how all these stages fit together.

How to Replace Both Filters in One Service

Set aside about 15 minutes and keep a towel nearby.

  1. Switch off the purifier and close the water inlet. Open the purifier tap to release pressure.

  2. Open the first housing (sediment) and remove the old filter. Note which way it sat.

  3. Wipe the inside of the housing to remove sludge, then fit the new sediment filter.

  4. Open the second housing (carbon), remove the old filter, and clean the housing.

  5. Fit the new carbon filter, making sure it seats firmly on the base.

  6. Hand-tighten both housings. Over-tightening can crack them. Check the sealing O-rings are in place.

  7. Open the inlet and check for leaks at both joints.

  8. Flush before drinking. Run the purifier and discard the first few litres to clear loose carbon fines and trapped air.

  9. Write the date on the housing or the wall. Next service: three to six months out.

If the housings themselves are cracked or leaking, check the cartridge filter housing range before refitting. For a full health check including TDS testing, you can also book the RO Service.

Common Mistakes When Servicing Pre-Filters

  • Swapping the order. Carbon first and sediment second shortens carbon life, as covered above.

  • Replacing only the carbon filter while a clogged sediment filter keeps sending dirt downstream.

  • Skipping the housing clean. Old sludge in the bowl recontaminates a fresh filter.

  • Not flushing the new carbon filter. Fresh carbon releases fine black dust at first; flushing clears it.

  • Waiting for a taste complaint. By the time the smell returns, the carbon has been spent for a while. Replace on schedule.

  • Assuming any 10 inch filter fits. Confirm your housing is 10 inch with a 2 inch diameter. Some purifiers use 12 inch or 20 inch housings, which need different cartridges. The cartridge filter size guide explains how to check.

Why Does the Sediment Filter Go Before the Carbon Filter?

This is one of the most common installation questions, and the order is not arbitrary.

A sediment filter is a mechanical screen. A carbon filter is a packed bed of activated carbon. If particles reach the carbon first, they clog the bed and cut the number of pores available for chlorine and odour removal. The carbon wears out early, and you only notice when the smell returns.

Put the sediment filter first and the carbon bed stays clean for its full life. Put them the wrong way round and you pay for it in shorter carbon life and, eventually, extra load on the membrane. Pearl Water's own replacement guidance says the same thing: new sediment filter in the first housing, new carbon filter in the second.

Why Buy the Combo Instead of Two Separate Filters?

Because the two filters are almost always due at the same service visit. Buying them as a pair gives you three practical advantages:

  • Synchronised replacement. One date, one change, both stages fresh. You're not tracking two calendars.

  • A matched set. Same size, same micron rating, same product line, so there's no guessing whether two separately bought filters will fit your housings.

  • Lower total cost and one delivery. One order, one shipment, and the volume discount stacks if you're servicing more than one purifier.

The one case where buying separately makes sense is when only one stage is overdue. A sediment filter in a borewell home can clog in two to three months while the carbon filter still has life left. For that, the standalone Carbon Filter Classic or a domestic sediment filter is the better pick.

How Often Should You Replace Them?

Pearl Water lists a typical life of 3–6 months for both filters, with the sediment filter rated up to 6,000 litres. Where you land in that range depends mostly on your water source:

Water source

What it does to the filters

Typical replacement

Municipal supply, moderate chlorination

Carbon works hardest; sediment load is low

Closer to 5–6 months

Overhead tank, older pipes

Rust flakes and scale reach the sediment stage

Around 4 months

Borewell water

Sand and silt load the sediment filter quickly

3–4 months

Tanker-supplied water

Variable sediment and chlorine, unpredictable

Check at 3 months

Which Pearl Water Kit Do You Need?

"Combo" can be confused with "kit" because the product names overlap. This quick guide separates them so you buy the right one the first time:

If your situation is...

Look at

Only the two pre-filters are due (most common, every 3–6 months)

This combo

You want a slightly higher-spec pre-filter pair

Carbon & Sediment Filter Combo (Ultra)

You want a basic or complete pre-filter bundle

Basic Pre Filter Kit (Classic) or Complete Pre Filter Kit

Pre-filters plus the membrane are overdue

Membrane Performance Kit (Classic)

It's a full annual service across every stage

Full RO Service Kit (Classic)

You also want mineral/alkaline output

Alkaline RO Filter Kit

Check each listing for its exact inclusions before ordering. Browse the full RO Filter Kit range for everything in one place.

Classic vs Ultra: The Ultra line is the higher-spec option. Pearl Water's carbon filter guide describes the Ultra carbon filter as rated to 8,000 litres and 27 cm long, against 6,000 litres for the Classic. If your purifier takes the longer cartridge or your water is heavily chlorinated, compare the Ultra combo. For a standard 10 inch housing and moderate water, Classic is the practical choice.

FAQS

What is included in the Carbon & Sediment Filter Combo (Classic)? One Classic pre-carbon filter and one Classic sediment filter, sold as a matched pair. No housing, membrane, or post-carbon filter is included.

Is this a pre-carbon or post-carbon filter? Pre-carbon. It sits before the RO membrane as the second stage and also protects the membrane from chlorine. The small inline post-carbon filter after the membrane is a separate part.

Which filter goes first, sediment or carbon? Sediment goes in the first housing and carbon in the second. Sediment must come first so particles don't clog the carbon bed.

Can I replace only the carbon filter or only the sediment filter? Yes, if only one stage is overdue. Pre-filters are usually changed together for convenience, but borewell homes often need sediment changes sooner.

Will it fit my RO purifier? It fits standard 10 inch housings with a 2 inch diameter and is listed as compatible with domestic RO purifiers. Measure your housing first if you're unsure, since some use 12 or 20 inch cartridges.

How long does the combo last? Typically 3 to 6 months, depending on water quality and daily usage. Borewell and tanker water sit at the shorter end.

Does the combo remove TDS? No. Neither filter reduces dissolved salts. TDS reduction is the RO membrane's job. The combo protects the membrane so it can do that job for longer.

How is the Classic combo different from the Ultra combo? Ultra is the higher-spec line, with a longer rated carbon life and a longer cartridge. See the Ultra combo for its exact specifications.

Do I need to flush the filters after installing? Yes. Run the purifier and discard the first few litres to clear loose carbon fines and trapped air.

Can I install it myself? Yes, it's designed for self-installation. You mainly need to open two housings, swap the filters, and check for leaks.

Is this suitable for borewell water? Yes. The sediment stage is built for the sand and rust load common in borewell water, though you should plan on the shorter 3–4 month interval.

How do I know when it's time to change them? Slow flow, a brown sediment filter, a returning chlorine smell, or simply hitting the 3–6 month mark. Test output with a TDS meter to check whether the membrane is the real issue.

Will a new carbon filter make my water taste different? Usually it removes the flat or chlorine taste. If taste changes after a service, flush thoroughly and see the guide on why water taste can change.

What if my RO is also slow after changing these? Then the membrane or a pump/pressure issue is more likely. Check the membrane replacement guide or book an RO service.
