Quick Answer

The Pearl Water Anti-Scale Guard is an inline scale-protection unit that fits on the cold water line of a geyser, washing machine or bathroom. It uses food-grade polyphosphate crystals, dosed at 2.0 -- 4.0 PPM, to stop hardness minerals from forming scale. It is rated for water up to 350 PPM (20 GPG) hardness, handles a peak flow of 1,200 LPH (20 LPM), and treats about 300,000 litres per 1 kg crystal charge. It is a compact, low-cost alternative to a full water softener, but it does not remove calcium and magnesium from the water. Price: Rs. 3999.

Is the Anti-Scale Guard a Water Softener?

It does the same job for appliances, but in a different way.

A conventional water softener uses ion-exchange resin to swap calcium and magnesium for sodium, which lowers hardness. Our own guide on what a water softener does covers that process. The Anti-Scale Guard is a sequestration unit: polyphosphate crystals dissolve slowly into the water and bind the hardness minerals, so they stay dissolved instead of settling as scale on heating rods, shower heads and taps.

Best for

Whole home or society

If you want skin and hair benefits or measurably softer water, choose a full system. Read salt vs salt-free water softeners and the water softener price guide for India before deciding. If your priority is protecting the geyser, washing machine and bathroom fittings on a small budget, this unit is built for that.

Is Your Water Hard Enough to Need It?

Not sure what your hardness is? Use our guides on how to check water hardness at home and how to know if your area has hard water. Hardness of 180 mg/L and above is commonly classed as very hard. The BIS drinking water standard (IS 10500) sets 200 mg/L as the acceptable limit for total hardness. This unit is rated for up to 350 PPM.

Where to Install It

Install on the cold water line, before the appliance.

  • Geyser: on the cold inlet, just before the geyser
  • Washing machine: on the cold supply before the machine’s inlet valve
  • Bathroom flat line: on the cold main feeding the bathroom, covering shower, taps and fittings

Never feed hot water back into the unit. The maximum inlet temperature is 45°C. Mount it vertically with room below to open the bowl. If you are comparing DIY and plumber installation, see can I install a water softener myself?

Refill Guide (4 Steps)

  1. Shut off the inlet and release water pressure.
  2. Unscrew the housing bowl with a wrench.
  3. Rinse the mesh and add 1 kg Pearl Crystals.
  4. Inspect the O-ring, tighten the bowl and check for leaks.

Check the housing monthly. Top up when the crystal volume drops below 25%. Buy genuine refills here: polyphosphate crystals. Other water softener consumables are at Water Softener Spares.

Common Mistakes

  • Fitting it on a hot line or after the geyser
  • Using it on water above 400 PPM hardness or 0.3 PPM iron
  • Skipping the monthly check and waiting for scale to return
  • Mounting it horizontally
  • Expecting TDS or hardness readings to drop after installation

Who Should Buy It

Not the right fit if your hardness is above 400 PPM or your iron is above 0.3 PPM. In that case, start with a water softener and read how an iron removal filter works.

FAQS

Is the Anti-Scale Guard a water softener for bathroom use?
It is a compact scale-protection alternative for the bathroom. It stops scale forming on the geyser, shower and pipes, but it does not lower hardness the way an ion-exchange softener does.

What is the cheapest way to protect a bathroom from hard water?
An inline scale guard on the bathroom or geyser cold line costs much less upfront than a whole-home softener. It needs no salt, regeneration or drain line. It suits single-bathroom setups and flats.

Will it protect my geyser from scale?
Yes, when fitted on the cold inlet before the geyser.

Can I use it on a washing machine?
Yes, on the cold water supply line before the machine’s inlet.

How much hardness can it handle?
It is rated up to 350 PPM (20 GPG). Above 400 PPM it is not effective.

Does it reduce TDS or hardness?
No. It keeps the minerals from forming scale, so TDS and hardness readings stay the same. For drinking water, see the difference between a water softener and a water purifier.

How long does one refill last?
One 1 kg charge treats about 300,000 litres. Check monthly and refill below 25% crystal volume.

Can I fit it on a hot water line?
No. Cold line only. Maximum inlet temperature is 45°C.

What if my water contains iron?
Iron above 0.3 PPM can coat the crystals and reduce performance. Remove iron first.

Does it need electricity or salt?
No.

What pressure does it work at?
1.5 -- 6.0 bar, with a maximum of 8 bar (116 PSI).
