What Are Water Softeners And How Does It Work

Water consumption is the most common part of any industry. It is highly important to obtain a correct balance of minerals of incoming water to industrial applications/systems for proper functioning and maintenance of expensive systems.

Hard water contains ions such as calcium, magnesium, etc., which have to be removed to continue the industrial process. Moreover, it can cause damage to the water appliances that your industry uses. Hence, a water softener can come to your rescue.

Water softeners are a crucial part of any company, factory or residential area because they help to protect your pipes, fixtures, and appliances from the ions found in hard water. It is designed for domestic, commercial as well as industrial use.

At Pearl Water Technologies, it is our commitment to helping you find the right product to ensure you get the best water quality. We have a wide range of water softeners and products that are ISO certified to ensure you are getting the right system installed.

Wondering What a water softener is?

In simple terms, a water softener is a machine that converts hard water into soft water. It removes high concentrations of minerals and ions from the water supply, which can clog pipes, stain fixtures, and reduce the efficiency of water appliances.

They are highly used in industries such as:

  • Manufacturing
  • Agricultural
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Hotels / Restaurants
  • Food & beverage
  • Hospital
  • Institutions

Let’s understand why do we need a water softener

We need a water softener to treat hard water, which contains dissolved rock, usually limestone, or dissolved metals like iron, calcium and magnesium. The dissolved rock and iron are found in both private wells as well as and municipal water supplies. This dissolved rock shows up as a crusty white residue, and it clings to everything your water touches.

Did you notice white spots on your glassware and fixtures? That’s the effect of hard water. It also damages water appliances by lowering their efficiency and shortening their life.

The iron shows up orange or brown stains on your fixtures, sinks, bathroom and water appliances, and it kills the efficiency of your pipes.

Also, hard water does not allow soap or detergent to dissolve.

Therefore, you need water softeners in order to get good quality water as well as to save your appliances from untimely damage.

The soft water dissolves soap or detergent easily, providing the same cleaning effect without staining or damaging your appliances.

We hope you understood the difference between hard water and soft water as well.

It’s time to know how does a water softener works.

Let us take a minute to understand its components first.

A water softener contains 2 tanks.

The shorter tank is called the brine tank, where the salt is stored.

The taller tank is called the mineral tank. The mineral tank contains a resin bed, which converts the hard water into soft water.

A water softener functions on the principle of ion exchange.

The process starts with hard water entering the mineral tank and is quickly diverted down through the resin bed.  Calcium and magnesium in the water get attracted to the resin bed. As the water passes through this resin bed, there is an exchange or a swap that happens where sodium exchange places with calcium and magnesium. This sodium water is called soft water, which gets released through the water outlet tube.

This is how hard water softener yields soft water.

The Regeneration Process

With the ion exchange process getting repeated for a few days, the resin bed becomes full of calcium and magnesium, making it ineffective to treat water.  When this happens, we have to give it a recharge to clean the resin bed. We do this with a process called regeneration

This is where the brine tank comes into the picture.

As mentioned, the brine tank contains salt. The saltwater enters from the brine tank into the mineral tank and washes the risen bed off the calcium and magnesium compounds, and releases it through the drain. After this, water flows through the resin tank and flush out accumulated dirt from the tank through the drain.

This is how the water softener is used and cleaned on a regular basis.

Some of the advantages of water softener

  1. Improved water quality

Industries, companies, factories and institutions rely heavily on clean water for various purposes. Hence, the use of water softeners guarantees clean water supply which is suitable for their requirement.

  1. Saves your pipes and appliances

Hard water clogs pipes and stains anything it touches. Soft water is really easy on everything. Your plumbing, fixtures, and other appliances will not have that scale build-up that hard water leaves behind. This will eventually reduce scale-related plumbing problems in the long run, thus increasing the longevity and performance level of your appliances.

  1. Improved Cleaning

Soap and detergent get dissolved in the soft water easily, making the water more favourable for cleaning. Hence, water softeners yield soft water, which makes the cleaning better without leaving any negative effect.

  1. Saves Energy

Hard water causes scaling in water heaters and other appliances that hold water. These scales formed in water heaters cause the appliance to intake more energy. The heater has to heat the scale before heating water. This means the heater has to work longer, resulting in higher energy consumption.

Moreover, hard water can even cause leakage in your appliances.

Hence, treating hard water using hard water softener can help to relieve all these problems.

  1. Reduces Cost

Hard water is responsible for frequent appliance repair bills. It is also responsible for scale-ridden pipes replacement. Utilizing a water softener to treat hard water will preserve those appliances, fixtures and pipes and end the frequent repairs and replacements.

Soft water also saves energy consumption cost as ends scaling related issues in water heaters or boilers.

We hope you understood the importance of water softeners for your company or industry to bring your water to the quality you deserve. basically three types of Water Softener Provides by Pearl Water:
