What is the function of Effluent Treatment Plant in Water Treatment?

Effluent Treatment Plant, also known as ETP is a water treatment plant that is used to treat wastewater. ETP plants are mostly used in industries like pharmaceuticals, textiles, and chemicals where extreme water contamination is a possibility. Effluent Treatment Plant plays an important role in the treatment of industrial wastewater as well as domestic sewage. Other contaminants such as organic matter, inorganic matter, heavy metals, oil & grease, and suspended particles are treated in the wastewater treatment process of an ETP plant.

Function of Effluent Treatment Plant

Effluent Treatment Plants are used by industries to treat their wastewater. All the industries such as pharmaceutical, chemical, textile, and other industries that generate wastewater use ETPs to purify water and remove any nontoxic or toxic materials or chemicals from it. All the companies used these plants to follow the guidelines given by the government, and for environmental protection.

What is the process of the ETP Plant?

The treatment process of the Effluent Treatment Plant includes the removal of suspended particles, dissolved organic matter, and the handling of sludge for disposal. Different processes involved are -

  • Equalization - The equalization tank balances the raw effluent from various processing units. An existing mixed effluent tank collects wastewater and pumped to an existing aeration tank, which also functions as an equalization tank. The floating aerator is provided to homogenize the effluent before it is pumped to the neutralization tank for treatment.
  • pH Control - The pH value of effluent should be between 5.5 and 9.0, according to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).pH neutralization is used to modify the pH of the wastewater. For waste that is acidic bases are used to modify the pH of a solution. In the case of alkali waste acids are used to modify the pH of a solution.
  • Coagulation - Coagulation is a technique in which liquid aluminum sulphate is added to untreated water which causes tiny dirt particles to stick together after mixing. That collection of particles combines to generate larger, heavier particles which can be easily removed through settling and filtration.
  • Sedimentation - Water travels slowly in this process, causing the heavy particles to settle at the bottom. The particles that gather at the bottom of a container are called Sludge.
  • Filtration - Filtration is the process in which the water passes through a filter that removes particulates. The filters are made out of sand and gravel layers. Backwashing is required to clean these filters on a regular basis.
  • Disinfection - Before entering the distribution system, water is disinfected. To disinfect and decontaminate water, chlorine is used.
  • Sludge Drying - Solids through sedimentation get collected and settle down, and then transported to drying beds. When the sludge thickness reaches around 300 mm, the sludge charging should is stopped, and the bed is segregated to allow natural evaporation to dry it off. This takes approximately ten days.

Why is ETP needed?

ETP Plant plays a very vital role in treating industrial wastewater. ETP is mostly used to treat industrial wastewater to make it reusable water or to safely discharge it into the environment. It is mandatory for every industry to install ETP Plants as per government regulations to treat their waste and wastewater for making it more reusable or for safe discharge into nature.

Treating industrial waste and wastewater is mandatory for now by the circular of state governments. As they now want to make water more reusable by the industry or to safely discharge it into rivers, ponds, lakes, or any natural facility.

ETP Plants are required for the following -

  • To make industrial wastewater reusable
  • To treat industrial wastewater for safe discharge into nature(like lakes, ponds, sewers, or rivers)
  • To save natural resources to be polluted
  • Government Regulations: As per the government rules and regulations it's mandatory to have an ETP plant
