What Is Grease Trap Plant, How Does It Works

2021-06-27

What is a grease trap?

An oil and grease trap is a receptacle designed to intercept fats, oils, greases, and other solids before they enter the wastewater disposal system. This phenomenon prevents drain blockages, foul smells, and backflow in your kitchen sink. It is simply a box positioned inside the wastewater drainage system. They are used for more than years and are also known as grease catchers, grease separators, and grease interceptors. Grease traps are designed only for kitchen wastewater and should never expose to wastewater from other drainage systems such as toilets.

It can be made of mild steel, plastic, concrete, and most importantly, stainless steel. It is used for commercial purposes having sizes from 50 liters to 50000 liters and above.

Oil and Grease traps can be located inside the kitchen, outside of the building, below the ground, and above ground.

How do the oil and grease trap plants work?

Grease traps plant work on the basis that animal fats and vegetable oils (grease) are 10 to 20 percent less dense than water. Due to that grease and oil don't mix with water. Thus, fats, greases, and oils float on top of the water.

When wastewater enters into a kitchen grease trap plant, the flow rate of wastewater is reduced enough by the baffles.

So the wastewater is given enough time to cool down and it separates into 3 layers. The fats and greases rise at the top inside the oil & grease trap plant and are trapped using a system of baffles. Solids waste settles at the bottom and the clear water in the middle escapes under an outlet baffle.

Many grease interceptors also have strainers for collecting solid debris and sludge, reducing the amount of solid waste that settles at the bottom of the grease separator.

Benefits of having Grease trap plant:-

Stop the FOG:-

The number one advantage of grease interceptors is their ability to stop grease and oil from entering the main water sources. FOG stands for oils, fats, and grease. Throughout the normal operation of a kitchen, there will be many substances poured down the drain of a kitchen sink. To catch these substances before they enter the main sewage line, a grease trap plant is needed to collect them.

If FOG is allowed to enter into the sewer system, large quantities can collect and grow, which causes major plumbing problems.

Environment Friendly:-

When you install Oil & grease trap for kitchen, you prevent oils and greases from entering the water streams, rivers, and oceans.

FOG is not only dangerous because of the damage it can cause to plumbing pipes and sewage systems. It can also harm the environment when it enters waterways. Fog can also create a hazard for living animals. Without a grease separator, this FOG would directly enter water catchment areas.

Cost-effective:-

When you have a grease interceptor installed, you are helping to prevent more costly repairs to sewers. If the FOG from your commercial kitchen is disposed of improperly. It may solidify in the sewers, which will cause very costly shutdowns and repairs.

Saves your time and money:-

The grease trap’s ultimate advantage to your food business is eliminating backflows. Avoiding these backflows can save you time and money.

How to maintain your grease trap:-

The employees in your commercial kitchen must use practices every day to help, maintain the oil and grease trap and keep it functional.

You must follow these steps in your commercial kitchen in between professional cleanings to provide preventative maintenance for your grease traps.

Scrape All Plates:-

Scrape all food off from plates and other dishes before putting them in your sinks.

Install Screens under Sinks:-

Scraping the food plates will get most of the food waste in the garbage, but there will still be some food and oil left. This is why it is important to install screens under the kitchen sink. These screens will ensure that any food and grease leftover on the plates will be filtered from the wastewater that runs through the kitchen sink, keeping your sewage pipes protected. If your business serves small grains like rice and corn, these screens help keep them out of the plumbing pipes.

Clean Spills Right Away:-

Spills are likely to happen in a commercial kitchen, and they need to be cleaned up right away. Cooking oil, sauces, soups and other food items that can be spilled contain fog that can easily find its way into a drainage system and can also create a slip hazard in the commercial kitchen.  Greasy food spills should be cleaned up as soon as possible with towels or tissue and thrown into the garbage.
