3 Must-Know Maintenance Tips for a Water Softener-

There are 3 main components associated with a domestic water softener like a resin tank or mineral tank, a Brine tank, and finally a control head or valve. Below mentioned are those components that need maintenance or attention based on the Symptoms they showcase occasionally in order to ensure efficient results till 15-20 years.

1)Resin Beads

Resin Beads are one of the most important components which is present in various layers inside a Resin tank or Mineral Tank of a water softener system. They help in converting the hard water into soft water in a process called ion exchange where the raw water carrying magnesium and calcium ions when passes through each layer of beads release sodium ions to the water molecule and simultaneously absorbs magnesium ions from the water by making it Soft water which we receive at our outlet or faucet.

1.1)Why does it need to be Changed?

Based on the facts the Resin beads normally last for 10-12 years but the abundance of contents of iron and chlorine in water deteriorates the efficiency of the resin beds resulting in bad water, Therefore it is advisable to check and replace them whenever desired.

1.2)When to Know, it needs to be Changed?

In General, As soon as you notice the quality like color, odor, or taste of processed water from the water softener is getting different nearby to its lifespan, it means the resin beads need replacement.

2) Brine Injector

A water softener Injector is typically located on top of the softener control head that allows the hard water to pass into the Brine tank through it by regulating the flow of hard water.

2.1)Why does it need to be Changed?

The life span of the injector depends on the quality of water it is allowing to pass. Sometimes it gets plugged with sediments caused by excessive dirt salt in raw water. Therefore it is advisable to clean or replace the injector for smooth functioning. You can simply clean it by unscrewing the cover and cleaning it with soap and water. 2.2)When to Know, it needs to be Changed?

As soon as you notice the signs of leakages and brown stains on the outer surfaces of the injector, it means it either needs to be cleaned or replaced based on the condition.

3)Cleaning Of Brine Tank

A Brine tank is a small tank that sits Adjacent to the Mineral or Resin tank. This tank carries a highly concentrated solution of salt which is added manually after every successful utilization. It helps the water softener plant during the time of Regeneration. As soon as the control valve realizes the water softening capacity of Resin beads is getting reduced, it directs the brine tank to release heavy brine solutions to the Resin beads present in the Mineral or Resin tank allowing it to restore its Softening potentiality.

3.1)Why does it need to be cleaned?

Salt mushing is a common problem seen in the Brine task. It occurs when the salts present in the Brine tank get harden or congeals into a thick sludge at the bottom of the brine. This sludge doesn’t allow the exact amount of brine solution to pass into the mineral tank and thus creates chaos during the Regeneration process.

If it is not cleaned as per the routine maintenance, then it can adversely affect the softening capacity of the resin beads which subsequently can result in hard processed water from the system.

Therefore, in order to get rid of such a scenario, it is advisable to perform Cleaning of the brine once every 1 year.

Steps to Perform Brine Cleaning of the Water Softener System?

Step-1

First of all, using the help of the bypass valve, disconnect the incoming water to the water softener and Brine tank.

Step-2

Again unplug all the connections between the control valve, mineral tank, and Brine tank.

Step-3

In the third most important step, you need to drain out the water from the Brine tank and to perform this task you can manually start a Regeneration cycle or use a Vacuum to take out the water from the tank.

Step-4

Once the water is taken out, now scoop out whatever remaining salt present from the tank and discard the remains in the right place.

Caution: The salt solution can kill the plant, flowers, or grass if it touches so it is advisable to be cautious while discarding those solutions.

Step-5

Once the Brine tank is emptied, now clean the tank with the help of a detergent or liquid shop and a brush. To perform this task, you can add 2 tablespoons of detergent or liquid shop to 1-2 gallons of water and then dip the brush in the cleaning solution and thoroughly scrub the base and corners of the tank in order to ensure that the salt is not encrusted.

Step-6

Now Again, Rinse out the water from the tank and discard it in right place.

Step-7

Once the Brine tank is properly cleaned as per the steps, now refill the tank with salt and enable all the necessary connections between the Mineral tank, Brine tank, and Control Valve. Now your tank is again ready to charge the Resin Beads.

3.2)When to Know, it needs to be cleaned?
